Ubuntu Server Failure

Recovering from an Upgrade Failure at Boot

Twice now upgrading from "Karmic Koala" to "Lucid Lynx" both are LTS versions the server have failed. I had each server fail to boot after upgrade and whilst I can not understand why, I can at least try to find a way around the failure and restore the system to working order. This article is my attempt to recover from such a disaster.

Hardware

Origin of a species

Just how old is Linux?

Just how old is "Linux" I hear you ask - well the answer may surprise you. Whilst Linux does indeed dominate the world with regard to the "WWW" or "World Wide Web" the origins of the individual distribution's can seem very confusing. Browsing the web as you do I came across this map it seems to suggest that Linux started in 1992 now as a Desktop this may be true but I a sure that Linux is considerably older than suggested here, however that is not the point of this map. This map clearly shows from humble beginnings how Linux as an operating system has evolved and diversified upto to the present day. Linux Origins

Android Scripting Enviroment

Scripting Layer 4 Android

Introduction

Talk is "Perl" is available for the Android Phones well it is and it isn't, in order to run any scripts you must run them in an emulator this is what the "sl4a.apk" program does. Why, I ask myself, Perl runs on many platforms so why not Android, I can not answer that question all I know is that in order to run Perl you need an emulator to do it.

Rooting your Android with ClockWorkMod Recovery & CyanogenMod

Introduction

Warning this upgrade is not for novices. Neither SoSLUG or the author of this article will take responsibility for any damage or loss of data to your phone since it is possible you will lose your contacts and any sms messages stored on your phone. Eeven if this data is something you have taken care to backup it is still possible you will lose your GApps Market (This at least we can show how you can get this application back).

Server Software

Web Server & Software

Introduction.

So now the server is built and RAID5 configured. You can find the previous article here. I'm slowly beginning to see the light at the end of the tunnel. All I have to do now, is select the server software and that's it; or is it?

This project has seen its fair share of setbacks; smoke pouring out - frightening; a failed brand new hard drive - frustrating, to name but two! Surely now, all I had to do to complete the project would be completed in an hour or so, with time for a little self congratulation on a job well done.

Crunchbang Linux

I first heard about this distro on Linux Outlaws podcast, checked out the EEE user forums and found poeple had got it installed on their Asus EEE's, so I decided to download and install on my 701. This is what the official website has to say about Crunchbang :- "CrunchBang Linux" is an Ubuntu based distribution featuring the lightweight Openbox window manager and GTK+ applications. The distribution has been built and customised from a minimal Ubuntu install. The distribution has been designed to offer a good balance of speed and functionality."

Mint Distros

Mint Distro

Introduction 32Bit

Mint is a distro - German of course - that has a wonderful appeal about it, although not a Ferrari it certainly looks as good as one, perhaps a better analogy would be a BMW, a masterpiece of German engineering thats Mint not the car. Most Linux distro's are derivatives and Mint is no exception it is Debian based ie "Ubuntu", one of Ubuntu criticisms is that whilst it works very well, is stable and reliable it just does not have great looks. Mint does have looks and really good one at that, it has a certain wow factor which appeals to many, it also has many of the features from the box that many spend time and effort to install on other flavours.
