Rolf Steinort - Meet The Gimp Video Podcast

SoSLUG are now taking orders for Rolf Steinort fine collection of videos covering tutorials around the application known as the GIMP! Orders can be made directly via PayPal to derek@techsys.co.uk each video is £5 plus £1.50 postage and packing to anywhere in the UK. You are required along with your payment to give full details of the address the DVD is to be sent. Due to unforeseen circumstances orders have been suspended.

A few days ago we at SoSLUG sent a request to Rolf Steinort in Bremen Germany to ask permission to produce a DVD covering some 45 videopodcast's on a single disk to those that want it, all video's are in the English language. To be honest all the videos we obtained are available on line anyway, but as a single resource it is readily available without having to download first. Rolf Steinort has readily agreed to allow such publication of his works, provided that we abide by the Creative Commons License, which we have no problem with. We are not stealing any of his credit for his videos all of which are intact as they where downloaded from the main site, we are working with him to distribute his video's to an alternative audience and further the cause of Open Source Software.

Gimp has always been one of the greatest major applications available for the various Linux distributions available today, and without much exception almost every Linux Desktop distribution includes in it a release version of the Gimp. The GIMP is without question an extremely powerful graphics tool but more importantly it is Open Source Software at its best and it is free.

It does however have some drawbacks in its native format "xcf" it can only cope with 8bit graphics and for most this is fine. However for high end graphics it does not compare favourably with it's competitor Adobe Photoshop which can handle 12 and 16bit graphics, this is something that Gimp developers will one day need to address. For the like's of you and I though we have an example of an extremely well written and stable graphics application package which can do most of the things Photoshop can do and perhaps a few that it can't.

SoSLUG has agreed with Rolf Steinort to produce these videos for only £6.50 each which will include postage and packing to anywhere within the UK and only £5.00 if you collect, we will be ready to take orders soon. The only reason the DVD is this price is because Rolf has decided not to take any royalties for the selling of his video collection, which allows us to only charge for the production and administrative cost plus a very small profit to help the club expenses. Each video lasts I would guess, and it is a guess approximately 15-20 Mins each, so worse case you have something like 11 hours of video tutorial available on a single DVD that convey most aspects of the Gimp application to get you started on this excellent package.

046 00:24:57m 41.3Mb Getting rid of People! “Getting rid of people in GIMP“ was the question. And here, about 9 months later, is the answer.
045 00:19:45m 24.5Mb The Right Colours! (Nearly.....) Inspired by this discussion in the “Meet the GIMP!” Photogroup at 23hq, I tackle the beginnings of monitor calibration.
044 00:28:45m 114Mb Splitting Myself! As an emergency fill in I made this. It’s a project I wanted to do for a long time - and did now without any planning and preparation.
043 00:32:14m 63.2Mb Brand New and Stone Age Brand new technology meets stuff from the Stone Age, ehm… the 70’s.
042 00:22:12m 60.5Mb Don't Panic! This time not in Bremen but in Seefeld near the North Sea. I was there for a weekend training in school management.
041 00:33:00m 47.3Mb Is it a Hammer! Even more exploiting him, I asked for a vector based SVG version of the “Meet the GIMP!” logo. I made the original logo with GIMP, thinking it was the right tool. I found out, that I had used a screwdriver to hit a nail. In this case Inkscape is the tool of choice.
040 00:21:59m 126.6Mb Talking Head! Drawing the Winner of the Monchrome Challenge with help from the BSAG and risk my life on the tracks of the tram to show you the difference between the distortions made by faults imperfections of the lens and the unavoidable effects of falling lines. In between you learn something about the nasty symbolic of swords in the hands of old statues.
039 00:22:00m 27.1Mb Different Tones and a View into the NEAR Future The rest of the show covers toning monochrome images and includes a new feature - the Blunder Alert Overlay. The image here is a tritone of blue in the shadows, red in the midtones and orange in the highlights.
038 00:36:09m 48.1Mb A Python in a Barrel The barrel distortion that gave me such problems last week is removed by using a built in filter for correcting (or simulating) lens distortions. You can find it in the image menu at Filters/Distorts/Lens Distortion.
037 00:24:59m 39.6Mb The Two Minute Holiday Shot Edit In Berlin for four days last week. Only took a point and shoot digital camera with me. So this episode covers quick editing of holiday pictures, done in two minutes.
036 00:33:20m 59.0Mb Nightvision on a lazy Sunday Afternoon This week you are in for a strange show. I try to make an image out of a not so good night shot by Stuart Martin from New Zealand. Stuart had his camera for three days and was experimenting with it. He shot the Christmas decora- tion of his neigh- bour but only got a dark and a bit blurry image. With no specific goal in mind I just played around with UFRaw and layers in GIMP and got a quite nice result. The 100% crop you see here is a bit like a painting, the full image looks like seen through night vision goggles.
035 00:14:30m 19.6Mb A Pack of Filters A show you how to change the colour, lightness and saturation of an image with the Filter Pack. You can do it in any order, undo every step and the best thing: you have a preview of every possible change at the same time that gets constantly updated.
034 00:24:50m 37.8Mb Full Control! - Monochrome conversion (3) In this last episode (for now…) about monochrome conversion I show you a way to get full control over the process of making a monochrome image.
033 00:27:00m 33.5Mb The Channel Mixer - Monochrome conversion (2) Promised a better way to convert coloured images to monochrome. And here is the Channel Mixer. It allows you to mix the amount of the red, green and blue channel of an RGB image and change the appearance dramatically. The image to the left is an example that I stole from a terrific website Cambridge in Colour. You see the original (in colour) and some outputs of the channel mixer.
032 00:19:59m 22.4Mb Fade to Gray - Monochrome conversion (1) Today I’ll start a series about mono- chrome or black and white conversion of digital images. It’s a new topic for me - so I start with a bit of background, some images from the Masters and a bit about the easy ways to make a quick conversion by desaturation and tweaking the curves a bit.
031 00:15:30m 21.0Mb A double face and more selections Torsten Kunkel made a video about the image on the left side. He had two passport images of a person taken 40 years apart. One with age 17, the other now. And he combined them in one image, showing what changes and what stays constant.
I added some tips about an easier way to paint the dividing line and about ways to further improve this image.
030 00:24:30m 29.4Mb Brushes Last week I covered the painting tools, today I tackle the brushes that are needed for the paint tools.
029 00:17:32m 20.8Mb Drawing Tools This week I show you some stuff about the Pencil and Brush tools. They share common options with a lot of other tools and I cover them in detail. Ever wondered how to draw a straight line? Or how to pick a new colour without changing the tool you are using just now? I’ll tell you about it.
028 00:25:25m 39.1Mb Are 8 Bits enough? This is a new thing on Meet the GIMP!, an interview. I talk to Joel Cornuz from the Linux Photography Blog about the differences in 8 and 16 Bit postprocessing.
027 00:19:30m 32.5 Mb Sketching It’s again time for a video by Joseph. He has explored a way to let photographies look like sketches.
026 00:06:59m 7.6Mb New Year Resolutions Today I talk about resolutions in GIMP, not about the ones for the New Year. An insightful discussion about this is at the Tips from the Top Floor Forum. Wikipedia has this about DPI.
025 00:29:40m 40.6Mb A Winter Morning A walk through the post processing of a calm and cold winter morning image is perhaps right for this time of the year.
024 00:32:34m 38.7Mb Lots of Panoramas and a Phat Batch In this show you’ll see all the panorama shots you sent in for the Panorama Challenge in Episode 019 in a slideshow with music from ccmixter.org. I play “Samurai Story” from shockshadow. I have asked Chris Marquardt from Tips from the Top Floor, Happy Shooting, Photocast Network and other stuff to give me a random number for drawing the winner.
023 00:26:28m 32.2Mb Colours, Colors and Dialogs GIMP offers you 9 different ways to select a colour for foreground and background. I try to make sense of them. Perhaps it’s a bit too long winded? Please comment on that here or write me a mail. I need YOUR input for thinking about where to go in the next year.
022 00:30:00m 42.0Mb The Secrets of the Unsharp Mask This week I go out of my comfort zone and cover the Unsharp Mask. I never found time to get into that thing. Black Art I thought - and well, it is a bit.
021 00:12:46m 26.3Mb Warp and more fun with animations This week I go out of my comfort zone and cover the Unsharp Mask. I never found time to get into that thing. Black Art I thought - and well, it is a bit.
020 00:21:03m 43.0Mb Easy Animation Gimp can produce animated GIF files. It’s easy, if you understand that each layer is one image in a stack. It is shown for a short time and then replaced by the next one.
019 00:16:30m 67.0Mb Paaanoooraaamaaa! and a Challenge for You! Joseph, also known as BlueMojo, has made a screenrecording about the panorama software Hugin. And of course I had to try it too!
018 00:22:39m 37.5Mb Selecting Selections (Part 2) Joseph, also known as BlueMojo, has made a screenrecording about the panorama software Hugin. And of course I had to try it too!
017 00:35:14m 59.6Mb Selecting Selections (Part 1) Selections are widely used in Gimp. Select something to work only on that, to cut or copy it, to move it around…..
016 00:33:12m 49.2Mb And the Winner is…. / Frames and Tryptichs in a new Way In this show John Arnold from Photowalkthrough draws the winner of the triptych contest. Before that we talk about why you should also listen to his podcast and about a really nice workshop. I have to work at that time (May 5th to 7th), but otherwise I would have shelled out the money and gone there.
015 00:42:23m 56.2Mb RAW to the rescue! Mini-HDR ;-) I shot some autumn scenes with a Lensbaby in a very mixed light condition. And I haven’t checked the histogram after this shot. It is the only one with the focus right on spot and a dreamy flair. The leaf in the center was overexposed in the JPG image - blown out highlights ruined the image.
014 00:24:13m 28.9Mb Liquid Rescaling, Seam Carving and COWS! Liquid Rescaling or Seam Carving - two names for a new way to change the proportions of pictures while keeping the content in shape. The Gimp now has such a plugin and I’ll show you how to use it. COWS? Well, they are important…..
013 00:51:42m 76.9Mb A Triptych and a Challenge for You! Triptychs - and nearly one hour of them. In this episode I’ll show you how to combine three images to one good looking set and get some frames and borders around them. Again a layer mask is used to partially edit a picture with the curves tool.
012 00:21:07m 21.9Mb RAW, JPEG, TIFF????? What? When? Why? I try to explain the stuff that influences the quality of your images. File formats, compression, sensor size. Each solution has pro and cons - you have to decide what you need and want.
011 00:31:00m 26.4Mb RAW converting with UFRaw RAW conversion was a thing a lot of you wanted to know something about. And in this show I tell you how to use the program UFRaw to get RAW images into the Gimp. My job was coming a bit into the way - I had to build the schedule for my school. So this show contains some ’should be’ outtakes and perhaps I have overlooked some stuff. Please feel free to ask - I will be glad to answer all your questions in a follow up show.
010 00:19:52m 22.2Mb Rescuing the chapel from the rescue In the last show two blunders were made. I used an untested encoding and killed the sound for a lot of you and I used a layer mask with a lot of gray in it where it didn’t belong. So the sea didn’t look good.
009 00:34:13m 39.6Mb Saving a Chapel (…..from underexposure) Norman mailed me two images - this was the original shot made by his son.
008 00:16:28m 28.2Mb Questions and Answers In this episode I answer a some questions that came up in the last weeks. I discover the colour sample points, explain the colour picker a bit more in depth and give some pointers to ressources about the Gimp.
007 00:12:46m 16.3Mb The Curves tool In todays show I cover the curves tool. With curves you can change the brightnes and contrast of an image in a lot of ways. Either finetune the shadows, midtones and highlights or do something very strange as in this picture.
006 00:18:26m 38.7Mb Selective sharpening Every digital image needs sharpening. But sharpening increases the noise in the image. In this episode I show a way to sharpen only the areas that need to be sharpened - the edges between different colours or levels of brightness. All the other parts of the image are left alone and so the noise stays down.
005 00:22:27m 30.0Mb A ship in the fog (3) - off to the print shop! In this episode I’ll finish the editing of the image that kept me busy in the last shows. There was a lot to do - darkening the ship with a selective layer mask, cloning out some driftwood and half a bird, correcting the aspect ratio to something the printer will be happy with and giving him a hint how to print the image with a gray and colour gradient.
004 00:08:07m 12.5Mb A Ship in the Fog (2) - Correcting Colours In this episode of my video podcast I show how to correct colours with layers in the GIMP.
003 00:20:40m 28.9Mb A Ship in the Fog - Part 1 I start with answering the first comment I got :-) and show some ways how to get the GIMP 2.3 for different operating systems.
002 00:08:58m 14.3Mb Setting up the GIMP The GIMP is different from other Windows or Macintosh programs and so a bit different to set up. With this video I show how to move the dialogs into the main window, how to set up the tools and which preferences to change.
001 00:15:07m 21.8Mb Preparing an image for the web In this first episode I show how to get an image ready for the web.
