Chelmsford Linux

Progress Update
Through SoSLUG's association within the art and media community, Derek was able to put Martin Houston in touch with a tutor (Ruth Catlow) at Writtle college. As a consequence, the college is the proposed venue for future meetings, beginning at the start of term in September onwards. Details of dates and times of meetings, will be published in due course.
Ruth is well placed to assist Martin accomplish his aim of setting up a Chelmsford based Linux User Group. She is a great advocate of Open Source software, launching her who zero dollar laptop project. As well as teaching at Writtle college, she is also director of Furtherfield in North London.
If you live in the Chelmsford, Essex area, and are interested in learning more about Linux, or just need some help getting started, then please email Martin Houston at mhouston@deluxe-tech.co.uk for more information.

SoSLUG Banner Competition
Outline of Competition
You may have noticed, we recently upgraded the SoSLUG theme. One key feature of the new theme is the banner at the top of the page changes, depending on the page and section of the menu you are currently viewing. At present though quite a few sections do not have their own banner and so the default banner of a jigsaw, with a piece missing is used instead (see below for example).
Forums
Forums
Forums allow members to discuss topics with one another, that are relevant to clubs aims. The results of these discussion can be then be archived for future reference.
Topics, for discussion are posted to a forum. The initial post "kicks off" the discussion to which members can attach their thoughts and comments, to form a threaded discussion, It works a bit like a Question and Answer session. Inevitably any given topic may provoke further questions, and so a forum can be divided into a number of sub topics, which discuss a specific aspect of the main forum.

About the Southend Drupal theme
About the Southend theme
The theme currently being developed on the web design section of the Drupal SoSLUG site is called, not surprisingly, Southend. (see menu, Networking > Web design).
While this may appear to be part of the SoSLUG site, its actually a separate site, which is being used as a test bed for the ideas and changes members wish to make. At some point these changes will migrate across to the main site. In the meantime, by comparing the two, you can judge for yourselves, whether the changes are positive or not.
Website Aims
Aims of SoSLUG web site
One of the aims of the website is to promote all things Linux, and Open Source technology. The site content therefore is a reflection of members interests, and in this respect is free format, meaning articles can be about almost anything. The wiki pages, howto sections, and the tutorial (e.g. webstyle) portions of site, deal with more specific subjects and so their content can be easily slotted into a menu structure.

About SoSLUG
Welcome to SoSLUG, we are a group of enthusiasts based in Southend who meet every Monday to discuss all things Linux and to promote Open Source Software, both of which provide an alternative to Microsoft. Collectively we form a Linux User Group (LUG) hence our name SoSLUG. Membership is free and open to everyone, and you don't have to speak Geek. Why not just pop along one evening, you may be novice, expert, or just plain curious. Perhaps you have never heard of Linux or Open Source, but the chances are you have already used Linux without realising it.
