The purpose of this document, is to introduce Linux to novices. Written by a comparative novice, it aims (unlike other similar documents) to see it from a novice perspective. All sorts of fears can be incorrectly assumed, just because you have been used to doing something in Microsoft Windows® (MS-Win) and it is different (note: NOT DIFFICULT) in Linux.
So I'll talk a little about the system itself, common differences and finally, a recommended distribution (known as a distro) for novices.
As Linux is still a mystery to many people, the purpose of this Wiki page is to hold your hand and enable you to install PCLinuxOS 2007. Accompanied with screen shots, it aims to provide all the answers you need for a successful installation.
My page entitled Linux for Novices, http://wiki.soslug.org/wiki/linux_for_novices describes how and from where you should obtain PCLinuxOS and what you should do to get a Live CD up and running. I'm therefore assuming you have reached that stage and now wish to install the operating system to your hard drive.
This page is dedicated to Linux terminology that may be unfamiliar to new users. It is envisaged, that as new questions are asked of us, the page will grow with ever more explanations. Although it aims to be accurate, simplicity is as important and so perhaps we can be forgiven for technically simplified explanations.
This page represents an attempt to answer all the common questions we get asked. I hope it helps. If you have any more questions you want answered, please add them to the comments section and one of us will do our best to provide an answer. Please keep in mind, the questions should be of a general nature applicable to everyone and not specific technical queries.
There are some circumstances where somebody wants to install Ubuntu (or similar), but cannot access the CD drive as a boot medium. This is particularly relevant to older computers, where the BIOS does not have a first boot option, to enable the CD drive as the first boot device.
The Smart Boot Manager offered on a Ubuntu CD, can (sometimes) overcome this limitation.
