OK, so here's a small list of knowledge i have obtained over the years in the world of Linux (Ubuntu and Debian specifically):
Pronounciation: "Ubuntu" is properly pronounced oo-boon-too, not oo-bunt-oo. Just a pet peeve but still important :)
Specific Programs and Services:
Contrary to the title, this page is not about pirating DVD's. We at Soslug, recognise all forms of copyright and licensing, however, there is also an argument that fair use is being stifled by encryption introduced by commercial operators. It is in this context, the following information is offered. There are all sorts of reasons you may wish to have a copy of a commercial DVD. Young children for example, are notorious for destroying discs through carelessness.
As Linux is still a mystery to many people, the purpose of this Wiki page is to hold your hand and enable you to install PCLinuxOS 2007. Accompanied with screen shots, it aims to provide all the answers you need for a successful installation.
My page entitled Linux for Novices, http://wiki.soslug.org/wiki/linux_for_novices describes how and from where you should obtain PCLinuxOS and what you should do to get a Live CD up and running. I'm therefore assuming you have reached that stage and now wish to install the operating system to your hard drive.
After installing PCLinuxOS on an Acer 5051AWXMi laptop, the sound would disappear whenever I rebooted the computer.
This was strange behavior, as when ran it from the Live CD, it worked perfectly. Furthermore, if I ran the Advanced Linux Sound Architecture Configurator in a terminal, (command = alsaconf), the sound would work yet again until the next time I rebooted the machine.
Clearly from the afore mentioned behavior, something wasn't happening during the boot sequence - part 1.
