3gp to flv

FLV file converter in Linux

Using "mencoder" to create "flv" from "3gp" video format files

Many website nowdays are using swf and flv file formats to play videos hosted on there site or sites, it's advantage is clear in that the file itself is often in comparison to regular video format files smaller and easier ti upload so the the site is able to hold and run more video content with much less bandwidth than would normally be required.

Adding an Epson Stylus Photo R200 printer to Kubuntu, PCLunuxOS and Debian.

Introduction.

Having recently installed Kubuntu, and on a different machine, PCLinuxOS, one of my priorities was to get my printers working. This proved very easy with my Samsung ML4500 Laser printer, which was recognized by the KDE Printer wizard, but problematic for my Epson R200, for which the necessary drivers were not included in the distribution. NEW: Debian has now been added - see Part 3. Also, there is now a small troubleshooting section at the end.

However; fear not! There are comparatively easy ways to overcome the problems and all will be revealed.

ASUS EEEPC

Howto install Firefox3 with the Asus EeePC

Brian came to (SoSLUG one of our regulars), us last week with two possible methods for the installation of Firefox3, we thought we would try them out for the benefit of the many of our members that have one. You might be wondering why you should want to upgrade from firefox2 to firefox3, both look identical however firefox3 is a little faster than it's older cousin however it's most interesting feature is it's ability to page zoom, simply by using the "Ctrl +" and "Ctrl -" this allows you view any given page to your screen.

Asus EEEPC Networking

Asus EEEPC Networking problem

We seem to have a steady stream of Asus eeePC lately all with Linux Xandros as a base operating system, the problem this time revolved around the failure of the eeePC to communicate via an encrypted network. In the main most wireless network routers are capable of between two or three levels of network encryption across the wireless access point.

These range from :

  • None (No network encryption)
  • WEP (Wired Equivalent Privacy)
  • WAP (Wireless Application Protocol)

ASUS P5W DW Motherboard

Sound for Linux using ASUS P5W DW

After trying many tutorials scattered around the web with no luck, the problem was discussed at one of our regular SOSLUG meetings, and found that the Dell Inspirion 1521 shares a similar audio chipset that requires the Intel HD driver to function. The following is taken from the Dell 1521 page.

You need to blacklist the "snd-hda-intel" kernel module from being loaded automatically by appending it to /etc/hotplug/blacklist Reboot.

Building a Mail Server

This is a project to build a mail server. I will be using these pages to document my design as I go along. Hopefully it will end up as a Howto and also perhaps a tutorial on Linux and e-mail. Although I am building this project for myself, I would like it to become a group project. Anyone suggesting improvements or pointing out errors or omissions will be welcome. There are many resources available to help in this project, I will be using as many as I can and will be acknowledging and, hopefully, building on them.
