How to add an Article to the Wiki SoSLUG Website

Introduction

Some thought has been given recently to the aims of our club, affectionately referred to as SoSLUG, and as to how we can further promote those aims. One main purpose is to improve Linux based open source technology and information available through our website www.wiki.soslug.org . Accordingly, we invite all of you out there in cyberspace to submit articles which would help to promote everyone's knowledge regarding open source technology. The articles may be on any aspect of development of software, elimination of errors or faults in known distributions or software, or any other aspect or topic on Linux based open source technology whether you are very experienced or just a beginner. However, before we can welcome any of you to submit articles you may wish to contribute on open source technology you should of course know about the process for doing so, and that is the purpose of this article or workshop. All that we ask in return is that you register with us, no cost or attendance of our club being required. Of course if you would like to attend club meetings then we would be very happy to see you. If you check our website, details of meetings and where they are held will be found. You can also find where we are located by visiting Linux Meetup and search for Linux groups in the Southend on Sea region. Beginning the Process When visiting the SoSLUG website you will see that the home page is split into a main central panel and two small side panels. In the left hand side panel you will find provision for signing in or registering with us. Once registered or signed in you will see your username appear in the left hand panel and beneath that a small menu, Fig. 1 (in the drawings, click to open). To enter an article first select Create Content from this menu. This takes you to the next page, Fig. 2, where you must select Wiki Page. In the Wiki Page which then appears, Fig. 3, you need to enter a title for your article, highlight a topic and enter a category or categories in the Category Box. A list of Topics is found above the Category Box. Select an appropriate Topic and then, in lower case, enter the selected Topic in the Category Box. As you do so a drop down menu appears from which you may be able to select a more appropriate/accurate category.. The next step is to select Input Format below the Body Box and then Full HTML, Fig. 4. Now enter the text of your article by locating it on your computer and then opening it. Once opened copy your text and paste it into the Body Box immediately below the Category Box on the Wiki Page. This will ensure your article once completed will be published with well organised paragraphs and Figures if necessary (see more below). Next scroll down to the bottom of the Wiki Page, enter the CAPTCHA code, Fig. 5, and select Save. This saves the article for further amendment, such as entering any figures and places a copy of your article onto the Soslug website. Adding Images Your article will be found at the top of the Homepage of our website. Click on Edit above your article and you will be directed to an edit page. Locate within your article where you want your first Figure to appear, make some space and click in that space. Now go to the bottom of the Body Box and you will see a green cross with a thumbnail picture attached. Click on this cross and an Add Image panel appears, Fig. 6. Simply click Upload in this panel and another Add Image panel appears, Fig. 7. In this latter panel enter a title such as Fig.1. Then click Browse below the title and locate Fig. 1 for example on your computer. When located open the Fig. 1 file and it's location is entered automatically in the box next to the Browse Button. Then click Insert and a final Add Image panel is presented, Fig. 8. To complete this final Add Image panel leave blank the title and description. Next there are three drop down menus which determine the size, location and manner of presentation on a page. The first drop down menu determines the size and in my Fig. 8 you will see I have selected Thumbnail to be located or aligned to the left. Then I have selected to have Fig. 8 display as a pop-up window and Insert Mode to show HTML. Having made your choices click Insert. You will then return to your article and the figures will be at your selected locations in HTML code. Having repeated the adding of any other images in the same manner as just described scroll down to the bottom of the page where you will see a CAPTCHA code. Enter the code and select Save. Then Log Out. Your article will now be displayed in full on the Wiki SoSLUG website for all to see. We look forward to hearing from you.
