Adding Content to This Site

This site http://wiki.soslug.org is a sub domain of the main http://soslug.org (Southend on Sea Linux User Group) site it is an area that anyone can add relevant Linux howto's and other suitable content. You may be asking yourself, with so many howto's out there why do we need yet another? This is a good question, and if you know Linux well and your acquainted with deciphering the various Man pages and Info pages then we guess you don't. However if the ordinary man or women for that matter is to come to terms with and use Linux, they will need to know in plain English or in a language less geek at least, how to achieve the various tasks required within Linux. We are not saying the Man or Info Pages or the various Howto's available are bad or unreadable it's just that Joe Public does not necessarily understand most of what is written in them. Ok perhaps what we are trying to archive is no better, but we hope that with the addition of suitable screen dumps at each step of the process the task becomes perhaps more manageable. In order to add any content to this site first you will need to register, we ask you to do this that we may preserve the standard and quality of this site and to provide some feedback and encouragement for your entries, in the hope you will add even more. Should you have knowledge of how to achieve something in Linux and want to share it, then we want you to participate and add that content to this site, it is not essential that you can author a book we are not asking this of you, corrections and grammar can be altered later either by yourself or a Moderator working for the site.

Why do we have Moderators?

A necessary evil unfortunately, if we did not moderate this site for postings the vast majority of this site's content would be full of unsavory material and a blistering array of links to other equally unsavory site's, it is for this reason and the wish to preserve the dignity of the people using this site that we use Moderators.

Can I become a Moderator?

Most certainly anyone form any background can become a Moderator for this site we would welcome the assistance genius or novice. You can achieve this by first creating an account on the wiki soslug site and making a request to act as a moderator for this site, before you are activated as a Moderator we would like your attendance one evening at our club to meet some of the club members and for some informal training which may take 30 to an hour to complete. Moderators What Exactly is Involved?

As a Moderator we would ask you to manage new entries submitted to this site you will be expected to communicate with the original author of the material submitted, usually via email with suggestions for additions or alterations. Presentations and style will inevitably differ but this does not matter. Only the readability of the content, once you are satisfied with this content you can publish the posting to the site. In a nut shell that is all we ask of you, easy really.

How do I now the information I give is correct?

Like most procedures it is best you start from a known baseline, a baseline in this case is a known default installation this can be from a LiveCD or standard install package. The LiveCD has it's advantages especially if you want to check your written procedure, however if you are providing a procedure that requires the CD or DVD within its normal operation a LiveCD can be troublesome. When you have an installation for others to follow compile your procedure from the baseline, that way the only assumption you need make is that your audience need only install packages for whatever linux distribution nominated from your procedure to get the installation to work provide where possible within your procedure screen shots. Remember no matter what your level either novice or expert someone could benefit from the procedure you write.

Can I add an installation procedure for M$ Windoz?

No, if you want to add a procedure of this sought you are looking in the wrong place!

Generally speaking we do link to other sites provided they meet certain criteria. *Is your site and or service non profit *Is the content of the site relevant to SoSLUG it members or any of it's activities *Are you running another Linux User Group or similar organisation or club *Your site does not contain commercial links or advertisement's (Moderator's Discretion definitely no Windoz links) Linking from our site is not beyond the realm of possibility, however as most if not all SoSLUG's activities are based around free education and knowledge sharing we would wish to preserve as far as possible the free nature of this and our other sites and the links to which it may point to.
